California Senate Bill 1258 (SB1258) calls for the California Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) to draft new standards for greywater use in CA that will probably take effect in 2011. The bill calls for stakeholder input. On this site you'll find a compilation of resources to help the DHCD make the most of its mandate in SB1258 to develop new graywater standards for California.
- VIEW graywater data & calculations, suggested standards, resources, history of graywater in Calif., and more...
- TAKE ACTION and WRITE A LETTER to the DHCD!

Calif. greywater law history is interesting and bears on the present and future in many ways. Here's the current status:
California greywater law*:

* Apparently the CA Building Standards Commission screwed up and put in the ancient Appendix J – a retired relic from the dark ages, without the 1997 improvements, into the 2007 CPC. They subsequently have included the correct version as an errata "Appendix G" as a canary colored insert in back of code!
Senate Bill 1258 (passed July 2, 2008) directs the Department of Housing and Community Development to develop a more wide-ranging set of standards for graywater systems for both indoor and outdoor uses. These new standards will then be recommended to the California Building Standards Commission for adoption. It will probably come out in the 2010 CPC, and be based on 2009 UPC with CA amendments.
The DHCD is holding stakeholders' meetings to review the greywater code. They are in the process of developing new building standards which will be submitted to the California Building Standards Commission (CBSC) as part of the 2009 Triennial Code Adoption Cycle.
To be added to the Stakeholder's Group to have input into California's new greywater ordinance, contact James Rowland, the lead contact at the DHCD,

Dear Greywater Stakeholders: The greywater regulation revolution was started in 1989 in Santa Barbara, California. It spread from there to four other communities, then the whole state, via the Uniform Plumbing Code, in 1992.
